THAILAND: Bird Flu Fear Edges Out Small Farmers

Marwaan Macan-Markar

CHACHOENGSAO, Sep 6 2006 (IPS) – To be a duck in a modern poultry farm, that conforms to bio-safety measures against bird flu, is to be condemned to a brief, joyless life bereft of sunshine or a pond to take a dip in.
That is the fate of 80,000 ducks currently spending 42 weeks before being slaughtered for the table at the Big Duck Farm located in this province, east of Bangkok.

Visitors to this farm are sprayed with disinfectant and the workers must also shower and shampoo and wear protective clothing before going into the long, low-rise sheds covered with black fabric where the ducks are raised.

We have also begun to check the ducks every eight weeks for avian influenza, says Sompiss Jullabutradee, a consultant at the Big Duck Farm. Whe…

HEALTH-PAKISTAN: ‘War on Terror’ Cripples Border Hospitals

Ashfaq Yusufzai

PESHAWAR, Jun 5 2007 (IPS) – Pakistan s Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) extends 27,220 sq km along the Afghanistan border and has been the target of a series of debilitating U.S. missile attacks since 2005.
Believed to be hiding amongst its 3.5 million Pashtuns are several top al-Qaeda, flushed out of Afghanistan along with the country s former Taliban rulers, by the U.S., and its allies.

Aerial attacks have crippled FATA s once well-organised health delivery network. Government-run hospitals are exposed to U.S. air attacks from across the border in Afghanistan, and the retaliatory fire by Taliban and pro-Taliban groups.

The seriously ill are taken by road to overcrowded hospitals in the neighbouring North West Frontier Province (NWFP…

SWAZILAND: Patients Fail to Adhere to TB Treatment

Mantoe Phakathi

MBABANE, Jan 9 2009 (IPS) – Every five minutes she gives a hacking cough. Ndlaleni Ndzinisa (70) says she has continuously suffered from tuberculosis for the past five years. Because she cannot afford to pay for transport to the nearest hospital, she has repeatedly failed to adhere to her tuberculosis (TB) treatment.
Ndzinisa s doctor, Franklin Ackom, says it is highly unusual that she has not been diagnosed with the difficult-to-treat, multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extremely-drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB), which are strains that are resistant to treatment by first-line and second-line drugs, including Isoniazid and Rifampicin.

It s against my will, said Ndzinisa, who lives in the small village of Lulakeni, in southern Swaziland. I cannot afford th…

Latin America Takes a New Look at Neglected Diseases

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb 3 2012 (IPS) – The rise of emerging economies in Latin America is an opportunity to improve strategies for fighting neglected illnesses and increase the region s contribution to the global struggle against them, says the regional director of an organisation devoted to this purpose.
Our region is going through a major transformation in economic and social terms, said Eric Stobbaerts, the Latin America director of the independent Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), mentioning the progress that has been made in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Mexico.

Advantage should be taken of this positive change to redefine the way these diseases have been addressed in the past, he said. Several of them are endemic in the region, like Chagas disease …

Global Coalition Seeks Ban on Mercury Use

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 12 2016 (IPS) – A coalition of over 25 international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) has launched a global campaign to end a longstanding health and environmental hazard: the use of mercury in dentistry.

Spearheading the campaign is the Washington-based World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry, which is seeking to phase out dental amalgam, described as a “primitive pollutant”, by the year 2020.

The environmental health benefits from mercury-free dentistry would be “huge to the world”, says the World Alliance, “”The European Union’s science committee calls amalgam a ‘secondary poisoning’ because its mercury gets into fish and vegetables which children eat.”

A proposal before the European Commission calls for the use o…
